Ellie Clapton
If there's anyone that can prove it's not what you know, but who, it's probably Ellie. Born of common parents and into an honest but small family of only moderate means, the girl probably had little to look forward to. Providence saw fit to change that, however, with the death of her parents, followed barely 2 years later with the loss of her older brother.
Forced into living on the streets and doing odd jobs and errands trying to support her younger brother at the tender age of 12, it seemed she would be doomed to a life of poverty. Chance meetings with Solphin Acaran and Faith Allori, however, at least finally gave her a roof over her head and some decent coin.
After getting Ravelle Soranus as her guardian, she's found herself drawn into a life of faith, devotion and sacrifice that she still struggles to cope with. With the Lady Baronet's guidance, she's learning a good many things she likely would not have had the inclination to otherwise.
In the meantime, Ellie's contacts have grown considerably since she was thrust out onto the streets all those years ago. She's met too many people to name them all, from other orphans like herself all the way up to the Keeper himself. Besides other commoners, she knows a good portion of the nobility by name and title, many of them knowing her by name as well.
Not bad so far for a girl with her background.

Pre-game History
Ellie was born the middle child in a family of three with an older brother (Daryl) being almost ten years older and a younger brother (Gregory). When Ellie was nine, she moved away from Gateway Isle with her parents and brothers to Green Fields where they set up a shop. The shop did fairly well until Ellie was nearly ten when both of her parents died within days of each other. Her older brother attempted to keep the shop going, but with no head for trade or business he was forced to sell out just after Ellie's eleventh birthday.
Struggling to make ends meet after a few months and hoping to hear of better opportunities, Ellie's brother moved both of his siblings and himself back to Gateway with what was left of their money. Although money was tight, he managed to keep his siblings fed and clothed, if meagerly.
This ended after the demon attack at the end of March, 504, when her older brother suddenly vanished. Whether he was actually one of the ones killed or disappeared for other reasons, Ellie herself doesn't know. Since his disappearance, and without any other close relatives, Ellie's been trying to provide for herself and her younger brother with what odd jobs she can do. She has found it nearly impossible to be 'mother' to her younger brother, however, and he's developed increasingly odd habits with him often disappearing for days at a time on 'adventures'.
Current Happenings and Events
Older events can be found on Ellie's history page.
- February 15, 508 - Ellie quietly returns to Gateway.
- January, 508 - Upon learning of Ravelle's death, Ellie packs up her things and vanishes from the College of Healing; not even attending her late guardian's funeral.
- Late August, 507 - Ellie returns to the College of Healing on Draught, to finish her studies there.
Ellie studied Healing for a couple of years, though now she swears she'll not return to Draught. Nor does she show any interest in continuing to study that at the University on Gateway. She still draws, if less often, that being something she enjoys. Having little patience for such things, and no longer actively practicing, her homemaking skills leave much to be desired; though she does know the essentials of knitting, sewing, embroidery and the like.
Personality
Growing into a strange mixture of pessimism and optimism, she often expects both the worst of a situation and the best, simultaneously.
Despite all the bad that's happened to her, Ellie does her best to not appear sad. Usually, she succeeds and is cheerful or excited about one thing or another. Lately, however, her aspect is more serious than openly cheerful as before. She also has... a fiery temper when angry, though she almost never gets really and truly angry. Almost never. She is what some might consider to be "high strung" and someone similar, but with a lesser constitution, would likely be prone to fainting. As it is, she tends to simply get impatient about things.
Ellie is usually outgoing, but she can rapidly become shy and unsure of herself in certain circumstances. She also has a tendency to stumble, not quite stutter, on what she's saying as she attempts to express herself. The more sure she is of what she's saying, the less stumbling and filler words ('oh', 'like', 'uhm', etc.) there are.
Though she tends to like almost everybody she meets, and she knows a ton of people, she doesn't really have many people she'd consider friends. She has, unfortunately, started to take on a cynical view of the nature of love/friendship. She'll do a lot, within reason, for most people as a matter of course, but she generally doesn't expect others to return the favor.
With Ravelle's extended family pretty much all being nobility, Ellie's gotten a lot of practice with greetings and introductions. They may not be as well worded as those of Ravelle herself, but they're polite. Though she's finally starting to grasp most of the finer points of neatness and etiquette that she's found expected of her, she'll still sometimes slouch when she thinks nobody's looking. Or on long carriage rides. Especially on long carriage rides.
Even though Ellie will sometimes mention her older brother or parents, she would generally rather avoid those subjects altogether. The same is true for pretty much all of the bad things that have happened to her over the years. It seems that as far as she's concerned, if something isn't mentioned, then it never happened; or is at least easier to forget about in order to focus on good things.

Trivia
"I dunno, Ellie, it looks sort of like a dead mouse to me." - Mathis, regarding her drawing of a pond.
- She's never had a pet, but she loves animals anyway. Part of this manifests in her desire to learn to ride horseback.
- Having lived on her own (with Gregory), on the streets, for some time, Ellie is more practical than most her age. Grey is her color of choice for most of her every-day clothes, not because she likes the color but because it wears well and doesn't show most dirt or stains. For special occasions, she can be seen to favor bright colors.
- Even though she can sort of draw and write with both hands, Ellie's more right handed than left handed.
- After seeing so many people around her get killed, one of her greatest fears is that of losing the people she cares about; though this fear is not limited to just loss by death.
- Ellie once drew a quick sketch/portrait of Rourke while the Keeper was with her in the coffee shop one day.
- Although she first tried to turn it down, the dagger she received after the Flags and Fortresses game, in January of 507, is now carried with her everywhere and Ellie sleeps with it under or beside her pillow at night.
- Ellie's worked for Professor Faith Allori, doing odd jobs in exchange for both coin and art lessons.
- Ellie spent a year on Draught, at the Healer's College.
