For most of Altair's life, he did not know where or how he began. His memories started in a Draught Orphanage. However, it was later revealed to him in a letter that is supposed to have come from his mother after her death that he was in fact the illegitimate younger brother of Jarl and Gaius Paggion. Afraid of the wrath of Baron Ignatius Paggion or threat from either Jarl or Gaius if he were perceived as a potential threat to the line of succession, she hid Altair in the Orphanage to be raised away from anything that might connect him with the Paggions. Given enough circumstantial evidence, Baroness Khalani Paggion has accepted Altair's now-revealed origin and allowed him entry into the family, without title.
He was raised as an orphan, parents unknown, in an orphanage until about the age of five. Noting an aptitude for all things mechanical, combined with his well-behaved demeanor, he was sent to live with an elderly clockmaker who could use the help. It is there that he learned a craft, the ability to make, repair and figure out complex, gear-driven mechanical devices. He stayed with the clockmaker, the two making a decent symbiotic relationship until the old man died some eight years later.
Now barely in his teens, the young Altair was spirited away to Guardians, to an old friend of the clockmaker, a commoner Centurion who promised to continue raising the boy and complete his education. It's here that he learned a skill, the ability to fight, and gave himself a purpose, that of a Warrior and a Guardian in the classical sense of the words. Once he reached 18, he decided to set off on his own and seek out a path in life. Declining to join the Guardian Armies, he became a Mercenary and Adventurer, out to discover his own fame and fortune wherever the winds might take him.
After spending some time out in the world, Altair decided to go and spend some time in the center of activity for all the Isles, the central Gateway Isle. Between jobs, living on savings and becoming somewhat disillusioned by the Mercenary trade, he tried to see if he could find a niche there to fill. For a long time, he didn't have a lot of luck and even returned briefly to being an oddjobsman until he ran into the Lady Solenne Allaria of Cliffrun. They seemed to hit it off rather well, and given some time they decided that they could benefit each other. It was at that time that Altair gave up the Mercenary Trade, at least for a while, and became one fo Lady Allaria's Cliffrun Highguards.
