Azurios Erastothenes, Ex-Mogur and The Blue Mage

The Blue Mage was a necromancer who harassed the Empire with the raising of undead creatures for many years. He is known to have animated creatures for a large attack in the woods beyond the city, and even animated dead Emperor Maximilian (Rourke's father) to send the shambling dead emperor in to the Double Eclipse celebration of 502 to torment his son.

The trouble with the Blue Mage ended in 502, curiously timed with the appointment of Azurios Erastothenes to the position of Mogur Imperius by the Emperor. This appointment caused considerable consternation as the Mogur and the High Council of Mists historically have reserved the right to appoint the Mogur, but Azurios went to Mists after the appointment and defeated every member of this Council Rulership (both major and minor spheres) in individual duels atop Sorcery's Crest, one of these including the death of a combatant. Reluctantly, the council conceded to his validity in the position.

Recent History

After a time as Mogur and several notable events, Azurious retired from the position (reportedly growing bored with it) and took up a less public life for a while. Then, in January 505 at the first council that the Empress held after the Emperor took up his solitary existence, he came forward with a Unity Coin. Some might remember he was awarded it on Unity Day by the Emperor, a token that could beg a boon of the Imperial Seat that he was honor-bound to answer to. This self-same coin Azurios brought forth before all of court and, with a pretty speech, proffered it for the legalization of necromancy.

It caused quite a stir, and after that a special advisory group was formed to help determine the legal boundaries of necromancy. After several meetings, the rules were codified. At a court where the Empress was to announce them, the Emperor surprisingly showed up to have his authority carry the weight of the legalization, yet he overthrew one of the advisory group's recommendations and declared that a necromancer should never be permitted to entrap the soul of another, even willing.

Thus the art of necromancy was legal, and Azurios returned to the Council on Mists to argue his way into a council seat as Nex Ingredior, a position held along with the Illusia Primus, Quintus Essentia, and Omnia Viator. Now he interferes on occasion when he seems to think that either mages are not being treated as they should, or when he feels like causing trouble.

Personality

Azurios Erastothenes is certainly a villain, but only in the sense that he pursues his own goals ruthlessly and mindlessly, and he seems to look down on everyone who is not himself. Rumors admit to a daughter who goes by the nickname Medusa, although he does not seem interested in much interaction with her. Those who know him think it likely that he finds her nickname disdainful and has written her off.

He is rumored to have a close friendship with the Empress. He and Duke Raziel have clashed publicly on a number of occasions.

There is much about the ex-Mogur that is shrouded in mystery. He is known to have a sybaritic appreciation of luxury, comfort, and fine brandy.
