Born Catelyn Brewer, the now Duchess Draught was born to a common life, her father a tinkerer and mother an herbalist living in a modest spread on the border of Miller’s Isle and Amphorae, not too far from the noble seat of the Isle. It was determined early on that Catelyn would follow the path of her father and as such spent much time traveling from their home to Tinker’s Beach to sell goods, inventions, to pick up supplies.
Bookish and shy when younger, Catelyn spent much of her time in study, inventing, or with her other love, architecture. Though Catelyn was always an adept tinkerer, it was the last that garnered her attention, winning a design contest at fifteen, a contest that brought her before the Ducal Family of the isle, and for the first time, before the eyes of the Marquis of Draught.
Some stories might now say that it was love at first sight, that from that moment forth Rhyse and Catelyn were inseparable, but the truth is that the event was such an overwhelming thing for the young Miss Brewer that she scarcely noticed the Marquis Rhyse. Even though Catelyn unintentionally ignored the then playboy Rhyse, the Marquis was not dissuaded from his pursuit and sought out other reasons to bring the Brewers to visit with the Ducal family again, resulting in favorable contracts with her father that made the Brewer family moderately wealthy and sparked the relationship that quickly avalanched into an abrupt marriage of Catelyn and Rhyse.
Seven months later Isolde was born amidst rumors of fertility potions and scheming. Though no one was quite sure what actually took place, those involved never seemed inclined to speak of it.
Rhyse and Catelyn were very fortunate in their match, however abrupt and forced it might have been, and found a strong and compatible partner in each other. A strength that resonated through the isle when just a few years later the couple were thrust into the role of Duke and Duchess after the sudden death of Rhyse’s father and abdication of his mother.
For many years Rhyse and Catelyn ruled Draught as equals and partners, having two more children, Dorian and then Dominic, raising what they then saw as a happy, if not somewhat rebellious and rambunctious brood. On February 1st, 503, tragedy struck when Dominic died in Wereshark attack on Gateway Isle, leaving both Catelyn and Rhyse devastated at having lost their youngest son.
Eventually, the gradually increasing drug use on the Duke’s part made him more and more dependent on the Duchess to take over all the duties of running the Duchy, something that some speculate led to the loss of children that Catelyn carried, while others suggest that the loss wasn’t an accident at all. Few know what led to it, but at the end of August, 504, Rhyse Claremont disappeared abruptly after a trip to Draught and was soon after stripped of his title of Duke to leave the Duchess the soul Ducal figure of the Isle. Very early in the year of 505, Rhyse returned just as quietly as he’d left, and was definitely not the same man as he was when he left, and still without the title of Duke.
On December 18th, 505 A.G. Rhyse Claremont, Catelyn's husband of over 20 years, passed away in his sleep.
