Tyr is technically a monarchy, ruled by the Llafarge family, which can trace its blood line back to before written records. The monarch acts as head of state, and is also an important symbol of national unity. Despite the style, the monarchy has been essentially vestigial for almost one hundred and fifty years, holding a ceremonial position while the running of the empire is conducted by two citizen councils.
The current royal family was led by His Late Majesty Sean Llafarge and his wife Queen Dierdre Llafarge. Since the recent death in 504 of King Sean, their eldest child has taken the throne as Queen Sheridan I. Her king consort is a son of Pais de Leuvier's roi Michel Phillipe XII, and as of 506 the couple have one child, Crown Prince Francis Sean Roderick Llafarge.
