Lazarus Karaganinas came into the world in the usual way into the household of Duke Leopold Karaganinas and his wife Helen. The eldest born child, he was followed by a sister six years later. The family was happy and content, the parents loving and nurturing their children. He spent years studying his magic gift with the mages of the island, his father having been a great wind mage. Tragedy struck in the form of a pestilence which decimated parts of the island's population, the entire ruling family among those stricken. When it was all said and done in 483, new gravestones sprang up on the island bearing many names, those of the duke and duchess among them. Left alone, Lazarus took the reins of the land, ruling justly and well from his father's place and seeing to his sister's education.
Left in failing health by the disease that felled his parents, the Duke felt the burdens of his illness hampering his ability to rule, so he suggested to the Emperor that a successor should be chosen to rule in his stead. The post of Duke Regent was created and the heir to the duchy, Lazarus' own son Solomon, was given to him to raise. Thus did Lazarus go quietly into retirement, to live what was left of his days in peace, under the title Lord of Mists.
Fate intervened and an encounter with magic gone awry gave him a new lease on life. He came out of retirement to become Dean of Music at the University. It was not long afterward he met a young woman of Mists, Isolainae Karaganinas. Try as he did to fight the growing attachment between them, he finally admitted his admiration of her and the two were wed in a double ceremony with Lazarus's long time friend, Valet and his chosen, Cilla.
Lazarus and Isolainae are proud parents to their first child, Severus Karaganinas, born in December 504. They welcomed a daughter, Helen Karaganinas, in May 506.
