Background
The story of the young man known as Lorric Kincade starts simply enough. He was born to a happy couple of Auric and Marian Kincade in the town of Black Spire in the province of Shining Shores in Guardian. Auric was a legionnaire, and his wife, though not one herself, came from a long and storied family of warriors. From a very young age, Lorric was curious about weapons and would always listen raptly as his father, uncles and grandfather would tell stories of campaigns gone by. When he was seven, his father asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. Lorric's reply was that he wanted to be a weapons master and serve the Legion. His father couldn't have been more proud, and, when Lorric turned eight, he began to call in favors from old friends around the idle of Guardian.
Used to the campaigning nature of his former occupation, Auric became a traveling merchant and entertainer. At times he would go himself, leaving his wife at his home, and at times he would send his brother-in-law, Dugan, in his stead. Always though, whether it was himself or his brother, Lorric would go with them. He would spend months at a time at different garrisons, learning weapon skills from different masters around the island. Trying to never favor one style over another, he learned everything he could in these trips as he grew. The value of steel and the soul of a sword from Smithfield. Organization and the benefits of civilization from Caerdach. How to use the land and the value of not quite thinking in a straight line from Trebachas. The only place they never visited in 5 years of traveling and learning was Dun Artan.
That changed in his 13th year, when his father finally took him to the castle there. He stayed in that region for two years of hard training, and when he returned he returned with the ability to meld everything he had learned into his own unique style. He speaks little of that time in his life, and people spoke against him when he returned, saying that he had been tainted by the rebels living in the hills. He also returned with a small lynx cub as a friend and companion though most of the rest of his life.
If he had be bothered, it did not show. As soon as he turned sixteen he applied for service in the Legions. His previous training served him well and he fairly flew through the beginning training, though he had the wisdom to not let himself become arrogant. His first few months were over with quickly, and he joined the training Legions and soon proved himself enough to be promoted to the rank of Centurion Primus. He chose to enter the career legions, and, with only one small stumble in that plan, that is what he did.
That small stumble happened to be from a small village on the border between Oreann and Caer Cathartha, and her name was Shylah Connacht. The pair had met in his travels and had become friends, and then more than friends. Upon his finishing up of basic training in the Legions, Lorric came to a decision. He used what leave he had to travel to her village and propose to her. They were married in a short ceremony and he returned with his new wife to introduce her to the family. He left on his first tour of duty later that year, and later still his first child Marik Kincade was born. Lorric returned home to a happy family, and a year after that his daughter Kyree was born. Everything looked wonderful for the happy family.
When the civil war broke out, and Lorric was thrown into the front lines of that battle. He fought with distinction, serving under various Generals and managing to assist General Wilhelmina in several of her victories. That officer used her own connections to help get Lorric promoted to Tribune and given command of a full Praetorian century along with the traditional cohort. He led his men well, gaining their respect instead of commanding by fear. It wasn’t until the closing weeks of the war that tragedy finally struck.
Shylah had become worried for her own family, and leaving the relative safety of Black Spire had traveled to her home village to collect them. Auric and Marian had traveled with her to help and the two children as well. There were to meet Lorric and a contingent of his guards at the village as he was in the region. The village itself was supposedly behind friendly lines and in no danger. When Lorric arrived, however, he found raiders ravaging the village. Lorric doesn’t speak about exactly what happened there, and the rest of his guards respect his silence, however when reinforcements arrived all that was left alive were the Legion warriors and Lorric's two children.
He buried his family in the aftermath of the war, and did the best he could raising two children and commanding a cohort at the same time. He fought against raiders, rebels, and weresharks with distinction and honor. He was appointed as a garrison commander for his home town of Black Spire. At first, that confused him as he had kept as far away from the main branch of the Kincade family as he could his whole life. He soon found out why when they attempted to bribe him to look the other way as they lined their own pockets. Believing he would be easily convinced by wealth being a single father with two children, they were shocked when he refused.
Knowing that the rest of his family were corrupt did not come at much of a shock to the young man, and so he began to gather evidence to use against them. His father had kept him away from the ruling family of Shining Shores and their love of money just as his father had before him; the two lines of the family grew up with wildly different values. Trying to draw Lorric and his small family into this, though, simply infuriated the man. The more he found out about them the more he became incensed by their actions. Finding out they had falsified Legion documents in order to take armor and weapons was the last straw.
He personally led the raid that captured the last of the needed evidence, and then rode all the way to the Baron’s estate to deliver it. He fully expected to be punished along with his traitorous family and was accepting of this. They had harmed the Isle and the Legion that he loved, and if he went down with them then so be it. He only asked that his children be spared any punishment. It was with great surprise that the Baron and the Duke decided not to punish him, but to make him the new Lord Shining Shores.
Lorric still isn’t sure if that was punishment or not...
Personality
~ Carl Von Clausewitz
Lorric was raised with two things: morals from his mothers side, and military training from his fathers. He always knew what he wanted in life, and he was unafraid and willing to go through whatever it took to get it. His young life of traveling has made him both patient, and tolerant of other ideas and other cultures. One thing he has little patience for are those that waste his time, and they are usually shown just a bit of the fire that drives the man. He was forged in the military and he seems to be a well organized and direct man, preferring to cut to the heart of the matter instead of talking circles around it.
He has a temper, though its usually held in check and only seems to appear when someone attacks his family or those he cares deeply about. He will not hesitate to defend himself, and after 18 years of training he is quite good at it, a excellent swordsman and still he drives himself to be better. His practices still take up a good portion of his mornings.
Trivia
Though he isn't in the Legion anymore, he keeps up with many of his old friends there. More than half of the new city officials of Black Spire are ex-Legion or reserve Legion.
Few know the story of what happened to him in his years in the mountains, but several scars and his pet lynx that he calls Devlin are a constant reminder to him at least.
His uncle taught him contact juggling in his travels, and the man has kept this practice up though the years. He has even found ways to work the maneuvers into weapon practice.
He can't cook. Don't let him near a pot. He can kill someone with it and possibly kill someone with what's cooked in it; you never want him near the cooking fires himself. His children are learning out of self-defense.
He still practices weapons training for several hours every day, rain or shine, using a variety of different weapons. It's one part of his daily rituals he will not allow himself to shirk. His children usually come to watch him practice.
Lor' has done his best to learn different languages from the different areas of Guardian as well, though its harder for him to keep in practice.
Lorric's branch of the Kincade family has distanced themselves from the main branch over the years, he is the first member of his branch to hold the Lordship in decades.
One of his true passions is finding new and interesting weapons and weapon styles. He will go to great lengths to try to find foreign weapons and indulges in quite a collection.
