Solesian Mezelien, Lord of the Fang

Solesian is available for application. Contact Kyrie for more information.

Much like the other children of the Mists and their nobility, Solesian was a well-known figure around the Academy and the Fang of Imperius. It is rather hard not to be, given the notoriety enshrouded over one of Mists' most ancient families. The family name is irrevocably intertwined with the long history of cultist activity, rumours of demons and malevolent influences pervading Mists. If not for their exceptional loyalty to the duchy, their eccentric and secretive nature about the forbidden knowledge they have amassed surely would have done them in long ago.

Taking well to elemental magic, the young Mezelien showed greatest aptitude with coercing fire to his whims, stoking no few rumours about the besmirched bloodlines of the House. His behaviour did little to put such rumours to bed. He progressed at an almost too-easy pace through the Academy, though his consistent rivalry with his younger sister Kyrie and brother Savaric certainly contributed to their mutual benefit in class. The three were a very tightly knit and prominent triangle no matter where they ended up, making connections with most of the nobility and citizens of their age. Maddening instructors with his laissez-faire approach to magic and stunning them with his insights, Solesian managed to survive his adolescence with only a few explosions.

But behind the knowing grin lies a whiplash temper common to most elementalists, and the forbidden lore for which all the Mezeliens are known and, to a degree, feared. The Lord of the Fang never had the same desire for the political battlefield as his brother. Freed from most responsibilities of the court, he sank deep into the mire of cults and conspiracies threaded throughout Mistian society. That path brought him several unusual experiences, apprenticed at times to senior Magisterium investigators and elderly mages who made their careers ferreting out evidence of demonic groups. He was the active component behind his sister's wellspring of knowledge, and the two increasingly acted in concert after reaching majority.

Well their enemies would have reason to fear. Solesian's command of the mystical arts has been his fallback rather than his first reaction, and he developed his mundane skills to a considerable pitch. But for all his achievements, they could prevent the suspicious deaths of his brother and his sister's betrothed. The ties that bind the Mezeliens are an unyielding sort: the crucible they were tested in strengthened his own resolve, but at what cost?

After his brother Savaric's death and father's withdrawal from the public eye, the position of heir might well have fallen to him, eldest of the Mezeliens. But it was not to be; in a surprising reversal, Kyrie instead was named with the title of Lady Heir. Sole effectively took off, leaving her with the heavy burden.

Though he checked back in regularly and made sure to keep up with family and be there for them, he has often been noticeably absent in the months following his younger brother's murder. It is not so much that he is running from the demons of the past; he's running them down so there might be a future.

People of Note

Family

  • Kyrie Mezelien: The bond runs deep and any who see it can tell: Solesian is devoted to his sister and views her as his dearest friend. There is little that could tear him from her and his trust in her is far superior to any other.
  • Matthew Wyndham: Always an amused look or word for the man, but there would appear to be something else as well: something that Solesian holds close to him.

Associates

  • Raziel Devonshire: Mezelien loyalty to their lieges is nearly legendary, one of their saving graces. The Duke of Mists has been shown only respect publicly save for one incident that ended in swift apology.
  • Serenity Guybrush: His student in fire elementalism. Quite protective of Serenity, he has been a close companion to his apprentice.
  • Larimar Montaigu: He'd be a good kid if, you know, he'd stop dressing like so much of a poof.
  • Dyonith Zeloral: It's obvious that Solesian feels a measure of contempt for the man and has been heard to state that he needs to learn his place.

Recent Events

Called from Mists, August 505

However, many know of him as a man willing to help the masses: investigating into matters that others may not. In 505, however, he reappeared upon Gateway in a more public fashion but a few days after the Lady of the Fang's arrival. Though his sister maintained higher prominence amongst the Mistian court, he re-established acquaintances with peers and citizens of the Isle. As the singular fire elementalist of his stature, he took on students such as the Lady of Shadrach's Folly.

Curiously, he also drew interest from beyond his expected circles in the person of the Baron Ethos. Cordial meetings between the two men occurred with some frequency for a time to a tune of speculative gossip over what two entirely different men might have in common. Mists has never been a stronghold of Purism, though its religious notions are myriad.

After some weeks, he returned to Mists upon an unclear errand and his visibility among the imperial capital greatly waned while he attended to clandestine matters possibly at the urging of his liege, his own sister or his family; or perhaps his own pique. Who can be sure with the Mezeliens?

Re-emergence upon Gateway, February 506

The winter spent in his home lordship yielded few obvious results to the general populace, though it directly coincided with the sudden tapering off of a string of assassinations of Mistian nobles that plagued the duchy throughout 505. As the campaign of terror receded, his absence from the capital, Polaris, was marked by brief appearances at courtly functions and speaking with officials.

Sources implied the family urged him to take up a visible role again in the capital. His quiet return in February 506 was marked by several events that departed considerably from his habit of avoiding becoming the grist for the gossip mills. An argument outside A Perfect Fit with his sister followed provocation with the Duke of Mists, though they later mended their differences. Though he continued to avoid political wrangling that consumed the family, Solesian kept a moderate profile in the public eye as he worked on a number of unsolved issues with presumably mystical origins. The most prominent of these, the death of fellow Mistian aristocrat Lady Kraken Shoals, honed his formidable investigative skills further.

The Price of Knowledge, May 506

Scarcely a month later, the Lord of the Fang was in his home city of Polaris when the Breath of Imperius started displaying unheard-of properties, badly warping magic and killing citizens in a gruesome fashion. He and Kyrie organized an orderly retreat to safety indoors, only to be confronted by the eldritch fey power of the Huntmaster himself. He bargained with the ancient lord of the Wild Hunt, transformed into a white stag and sent bounding off into the night ahead of the baying hounds. Bans against hunting rolled through Dragon Lake until his reappearance from the wooded Alaisanne Mountains three days later.

Only he and the Huntmaster knew what transpired during those hellish nights and days, and he kept his silence upon the matter afterwards. His personality markedly shifted in the weeks to follow; no longer did he appear as driven or restless, preferring long periods of meditative calm and reflection to talking. Whatever fey touch remains upon him, the lord has gained some deeper sense of equilibrium... or trauma lingering months later, enemies say.

The Price of Knowledge, October 506

In early August 506, Solesian quietly purchased a shop in the newly renovated Temple Plaza in Crossroads. Whether any significance lay behind his selection of site remained yet another unanswered question. He opened his private investigation firm for business nearly three weeks later, and very few can compete with his lineage and a lifetime gifted by the experience brought by a Mezelien's education and vicissitudes faced by an active daemonologist. Secrecy shrouded much of his work and more specifically his clientele, though the barony of Crescent Coast most visibly contracted him over an unknown affair. He and Lady of Shadrach's Folly toured the barony together only weeks ahead of the baroness' play to shift the Currents from Polaris Port to Diuturnal's Cove, newly constructed in her lands.

Solesian was noticeably silent in any support for the political coup. Whatever fell out from those events led him to return shortly back to the Fang of Imperius as a blackening cloud of conspiracy descended over eastern Mists, fed by the murders of the Baron Regent Dragon Lake and his brother, Lord Shadrach's Folly. He all but vanished with the elder Mezeliens into diplomacy and intrigue, visibly acting as an emissary to other lordships on several occasions. What his most recent disappearance portends as 507 dawns and Mists withdraws into an uneasy period of waiting is unclear, but few men bear his questionable legacy now tinged by his run in with the Otherworldly.

Explanations are few in the coming, and so often, Solesian's re-emergence has been timed to significant and sudden shifts in the playing field.
